Mauritius: Transformation of the country through industrial development, SMEs and cooperatives

February 17, 2020: The key role that industrial development, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and cooperatives will play, over the next five years, in transforming Mauritius into a modern and ecological country has been put highlighted by the Ministerof Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives, Mr. Soomilduth Bholah, on February 14.

The Minister intervened during the debates in the National Assembly on the government program 2020-2024  : Towards an inclusive, high-income and ecological Mauritian Republic - Progress together .


Recalling the importance of industrial development in the production of wealth and job creation, Mr. Bholah explained the different strategies that will be implemented in a process of consolidation, diversification, modernization and expansion of industrial exploitation in Mauritius. These strategies will focus on export growth; business facilitation; the effective adoption of new technologies; sustainable production methods; and the emergence of new growth poles.


Mr. Bholah announced that his ministry is currently working, in collaboration with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), to develop an Industrial Policy accompanied by a strategic plan for the period 2020 to 2025. According to the Minister, this document will bring more dynamism to the manufacturing base and will significantly improve the resilience of local industries in the face of the challenges of a globalized and liberalized trading environment.
